JAECOO J5 SHS brings hybrid efficiency and a 980 km range to the J5 family

The JAECOO J5 now comes with a hybrid option. The new J5 SHS joins the crossover’s petrol and fully electric derivatives, giving South African buyers three distinct powertrains to choose from and an accessible way into electrified motoring.

The J5 first arrived locally in September 2025, and the hybrid follows closely on the heels of the J5 BEV, JAECOO’s first EV in South Africa.

The J5 SHS pairs a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, producing combined outputs of 165 kW and 295 Nm. A 1.83 kWh battery allows the crossover to run on electric power at low speeds and in traffic, which helps deliver a claimed fuel consumption figure of 5.3 L/100 km. With a 51-litre fuel tank, the J5 SHS can theoretically cover up to 980 km between fill-ups.

Drive goes to the front wheels through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). MacPherson struts up front and a multilink rear suspension aim for a composed, supple ride with responsive handling, while disc brakes are fitted all round, with ventilated discs at the front.

On the outside, the J5 SHS carries over the refined look of its ICE sibling, with minimalist detailing that gives it a clean, premium appearance. Standard exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof and automatic LED headlights.

The interior is finished in black leather, with six-way electric adjustment for the driver’s seat and four-way manual adjustment for the front passenger. Multi-colour ambient lighting comes standard, as do a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a power-operated sunshade, and USB and Type-C ports in the front row.

An eight-inch digital driver display keeps key information easy to read, and a camera with rear parking sensors makes tight manoeuvres less stressful.

A 13.2-inch central touchscreen handles infotainment and convenience functions, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth and voice-command support as standard. There is also 50-watt wireless charging and a six-speaker sound system.

Practicality is a big part of the J5 SHS’s appeal. A power-operated tailgate opens to a 410-litre boot, and folding the 60/40 split rear seats increases cargo space to 1,214 litres, enough for weekend trips, daily errands or bulkier items.

Six airbags are fitted, covering dual front, front side and side curtain positions, along with ESP, Brake Assist, traction control and ISOFIX child-seat anchorages.

The driver-assistance suite is equally comprehensive and comes standard. It includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Departure Prevention, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Lane Keeping, a Forward Vehicle Departure Reminder, Integrated Cruise Assist, Secondary Collision Mitigation Multi-Collision Brake and an Intelligent Evasion System.
